Travel planning: How does it work?

Almost daily the question arises: “How far have you progressed with your travel planning? And how are you doing it anyway?”

Of course you could just go off and let yourself drift. Sometimes here, sometimes there, and where it is particularly beautiful, one stays longer.
That sounds tempting, but one that’s not so easy to do when you’re travelling with a child. And two, we had to know pretty much in advance the details of our itinerary when applying for our tourist visa for China.

And since we like to plan and organize in advance anyway, this was not too big a problem for us.

The list

First, we create “the list”. A simple Excel list, stored on the GoogleDrive cloud, so we both could have access anytime and anywhere. It has now been filled over weeks and months: first a whole column with travel dates, and then bit by bit with cities/places to stay, followed by hotels, ideas for activities and transport options.

“The list” is the most important overview of the entire travel planning until the end of the trip!

Budget

Long before we started our trip, obviously, we thought about our available budget. After all, we would have practically no income for six months and would need to live on our savings. On the other hand, fixed costs such as rent, electricity, water, … are no longer necessary.

We thought about how much money had to be available to be able to break off the trip at any time in an emergency and travel home as quickly as possible. At some point this resulted in a generously calculated total amount, about which we will tell you a little more in the near future.

From now on, in arbritary order; depending on the route and the desired activities on site, either the train ticket, the accommodation or the visa has to be organized.

Accomodation

After the budget planning it was clear: Accommodation should not cost more than 50 euros per night on average. As I know from many previous backpacking trips, it is very comfortable not to have to look for accommodation (and a shower) after a night train trip. So, we always reserve our accommodation for about two weeks in advance. It doesn’t matter if it’s a hotel, a hostel or even an apartment, ideally with a kitchen and a washing machine: everything is entered in “the list”. For hotels, I pay attention to the price limit, good public transport connection and the possibility to book a third bed.

Transportation

Now it is important to get to the desired stations. Since we want to travel exclusively by public transport, only trains (priority 1), buses (priority 2), ferries (priority 3) or taxis (priority 4) are an option. Details on the respective booking procedures will be available in a separate chapter soon.

Sometimes it makes sense to organize the transfer/transport first. Because trains or boats might run only on certain days of the week; this should be clarified in advance! In order to keep an overview of the travel dates, “the list” is of course a good idea again.

Activities

From conversations with friends, browsing through travel guides or blogs, ideas are constantly emerging about what we would like to do and where. We prefer all kinds of outdoor activities, like hiking, skiing, cycling tours or other nature experiences. Obviously, everything should be suitable for children, and we also plan sufficient time for “doing nothing” and playing. Again, always keep an eye on which super-duper activities you may need to reserve in advance.

Visa

By determining the itinerary, it is already clear in advance which countries are on the route. The best overview of entry regulations for German citizens can be found on the website of the Federal Foreign Office. For us, the next step was to apply for a visa for China at the Chinese embassy in Singapore (more about this soon here). The visa for Iran will have to wait, because there is no diplomatic representation in Singapore…

Wer weiß was euch so alles passieren wird. Der erste Eintrag war schon mal toll. Ich liiiebe Excel und die Urlaubsplanung damit…..

Hallo Steffen!
      Nadine

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
