From Singapore to Kuala Lumpur / Von Singapur nach Kuala Lumpur

Deutsch / English

Es geht los: Von Singapur nach Kuala Lumpur

Singapur, Orchard Road, Hotelzimmer, 6:20 Uhr: Der Wecker klingelt.

Train from Singapore Woodlands to Malaysia Johor Bahru
Straits of Johor from train

Train from Singapore to Malaysia

Angekommen in KL

Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Alor Street Market

Deutsch / English

Here we go: From Singapore to Kuala Lumpur

Singapore, Orchard Road, hotel room, 6:20 am: The alarm clock rings. Quickly into the bathroom, quickly finish packing the backpacks, and an equally quick breakfast in the ice-cold air-conditioned hotel.

One hour later we march off, with a total of five pieces of luggage which Titus will count conscientiously over and over again in the course of the day. Orchard Road, usually Singapore’s busiest shopping street, is still sleepy and quiet, and we arrive without any incidents at the MRT station Somerset.

By public transport to the border

From there, the Red Line takes us north for almost an hour, in good company with many commuters and students. For the fare of less than 1.50 Euro we reach Marsiling where we manage to find the right bus stop, conveniently with the sign “To Woodlands Train Checkpoint”.

While the cars are already piling up, we get out comfortably at the bus stop at the border crossing and find ourselves in front of the passport control. Thanks to our generous time buffer, we have about an hour to spend reading and listening to podcasts.
At 9:15 am sharp, as indicated on the booking page (more about the booking procedure of train tickets in Malaysia soon), immigration opens its doors and we are quickly exiting Singapore and entering Malaysia. No comparison with the long waiting times you may have to deal with when going by car or bus!

By train across the border

The train is ready at the track, so we can immediately board, find our seat and wait for the departure right on the spot at 9:45 am. The train crosses the Straits of Johor, and after only five minutes we reach our (first) destination: Johor Bahru Sentral.

From Johor Bahru to Gemas

One escalator up, one escalator down, and we are instantly boarding the next train, which is conveniently waiting for us and the other train commuters. Of the four waggons, driven by a diesel locomotive, only one is occupied with passengers. We comfortably start again exactly according to the schedule at 10:10am.

The train finds its way hour by hour northwards. The Malaysian Railway needs a little less than five hours for the almost 250 kilometres to Gemas. Along the route, construction work on the planned high-speed railway line between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur has already progressed. Until it is expected to open in 2026, busses and cars are much faster, but travelling by train is incredibly relaxing.

Unfortunately, it is freezing cold in the car, so now and then we warm ourselves up in the corridors between the compartments. Fortunately, there is hot coffee with lots of sugar on board, and also a little trolley with some snacks comes along repeatedely. But we have taken precautions and Titus is highly satisfied with the beginning of our journey, which he spends mostly with audio books.

Also to mention: toilets are of course available and usable, even if only with a wrinkled nose, as the son soon finds out.

The friendly conductor, who takes great care of his few passengers and consults a tiny notepad occasionally, informs each passenger individually about the imminent arrival at his destination. For us he also adds the information that our connecting train will be waiting on the track just across the platform. Ten minutes before the official timetable, we reach Gemas and spend the remaining half hour until the next departure warming up in the sun.

From Gemas to Kuala Lumpur

The train to Kuala Lumpur takes another two hours for the remaining 160 kilometres, as this is a fast train that looks much more modern – and is also cooled to arctic temperatures.
Conveniently, there is a little table between our seats on which Titus can wonderfully draw and do handicrafts. So the last leg of the journey goes by almost in a flash, and we reach KL Sentral, the main station of Kuala Lumpur, at 05:31pm.

Arriving in KL

In the station concourse, we first find a mobile phone shop and purchase a SIM card with sufficient data volume for a few Ringgit. Then we find our way with the help of a supporting Grab driver through the city centre and to our hotel in Bukit Bintang. Since I was here last January, I can highly recommend the Jalan Alor Night Market right in front of the door of our hotel, where we immediately inspect the market stalls and taste some delicious local specialties here and there.

Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Alor Street Market
Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Alor Street Market

Afterwards, we all feel pretty exhausted due to the early rising and the long trip. Therefore, we decide to go back to the hotel, and after a round of reading everyone goes straight to bed.
In summary a quite successful start into our travel adventure!

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
