Kuala Lumpur – Cameron Highlands

Deutsch / English

Also quasi Glamping statt Camping.

From Kuala Lumpur to the Cameron Highlands

Thanks to our many packing bags we finish packing our backpacks quickly in the morning. In addition to our regular five backpacks, small and large, we have added another bag full of food. Luckily we find a taxi relatively quickly, which takes us to the bus station far to the south. On the contrary to our expectations we arrive there on time, while we pass the heavy traffic on the opposite direction towards the city centre.

A luxury bus ride

The bus station (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan, TBS) looks like an airport in terms of size and facilities. Fortunately, on a Tuesday morning there is not too much going on here. We manage quickly to find the counter where we exchange our ticket, which we bought online in advance via Easybook, for a real ticket.

At the gate we wait only a few minutes until our bus arrives. The luggage is quickly loaded and we can take our seats – right at the front, three in the first row.

Yes, that’s right, three – because this is a so-called “executive bus”, in which there are only three seats per row, and they are very spacious and come with adjustable backrests and footrests. Very comfortable!

With only a few minutes delay, we leave at shortly after 10 a.m. The first two hours we drive smoothly on the motorway first. We listen to audio books and music, I doze a little, because the tablet against travel sickness always makes me tired.

Many sharp turns

At Tapah, the bus driver leaves the motorway, and after a short rest, things suddenly turn completely different: one sharp turn after another lies now ahead of us, and the road goes uphill in serpentines for almost sixty kilometres. Before each turn, the bus driver honks several times in order to warn the oncoming traffic. Titus becomes more and more quiet, and all the other passengers also try to keep an eye on the road.

Then only two kilometres before the final destination it happens. Titus gets sick, but at least he gives notice in time and we are sufficiently equipped with bags, collected from airplanes. Thanks to this preparation, it is not a big deal, and shortly afterwards we arrive in Tanah Rata and alight the bus after exactly four hours on board.

From Tanah Raata a taxi takes us seven kilometres further to Brinchang, where we take a break and have a late lunch in a small shopping centre called Cameron Square. Titus is hungry again and eats Naan bread and crispy Papadams. He is very annoyed by suffering from travel sickness and insists that I give him one of my vomex tablets before the next bus ride.

Before our arrival in Brinchang, I texted our host and he picks us up and drives us another five kilometers along bumpy, muddy and narrow roads between lush vegetable fields and greenhouses.

Glamping

Finally we reach our accommodation for the next two nights. The owner of a farm has built three so-called “domes” on his premises (A’moss Farmstay). Our igloo like tent comes with two bunk beds, sockets, a few clothes racks, lamps and a kettle. In front of the tent there is a wooden house with toilet, sink and shower with a gas flow-type heater. Kind of glamping instead of camping.

Besides that, the facilities are a bit poor. The outdoor kitchen is equipped with the most necessary things to quickly cook pasta with tomato sauce in the evening, but it is not too clean. In exchange we have a nice view over farm fields and hills, and the air is fresh. Titus enjoys being outdoors very much and runs excitedly all around the place.

From early evening on it gets very cold and we are happy to have long trousers, long-sleeved sweaters and down jackets. We need most of it also at night, because here in the misty and humid high altitude (1.500 meters above sea level) of the Cameron Highlands the bedding feels clammy. I can’t fall asleep for ages because of my ice-cold feet, Norman gets a second blanket, but Titus sleeps through without major interruption until shortly before 8 am.

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
