Cameron Highlands – Georgetown/Penang

Deutsch / English

In Georgetown angekommen

From the Cameron Highlands to Penang

The only thing that can be heard just before my alarm clock rings is tentative bird twittering. At 7 o’clock it is still dark outside, only hesitantly the morning light shines through the thick fog. We get dressed and stuff the remaining items quickly into our backpacks. Titus refuses to have even a tiny piece of bread for breakfast; he is too afraid of suffering from travel sickness again.

Our host kindly gives us a lift in his huge pickup jeep to the bus terminal in Tanah Rata. He drives so fast along the narrow serpentines that I am afraid that we already get sick before we even make it into the bus. On the way, he dumps bags of garbage in an overflowing container at the roadside. Obviously there is no garbage collection here, and whether the container will ever be emptied remains open.

Bus ride to Butterworth

At the bus station Titus bravely swallows a pill against travel sickness, and then we are allowed to board the coach. Fortunately we have seats in the first row and therefore have an unlimitied view through the windscreen to the road. At 9 o’clock sharp the doors close and the journey begins. The road towards Ipoh, thus further north, is clearly wider and more comfortable than the route we took two days ago.

After a good half hour, Titus starts to feel the effects of the tablet, he speaks a little slurred, becomes noticeably quiet and puts on headphones without comment. I also doze off after a while and only wake up again after 70 kilometres when we finally reach the motorway. No sign of nausea, instead the child demands food now. After a ten-minute stop in Ipoh we reach Butterworth at 1 pm, after exactly four hours of driving.

Ferry to Penang

The bus station is right next to the ferry terminal, and we march straight to the ticket office with a visibly weak and tired child. There, we pay the equivalent of a few cents for the crossing and enter the quite outdated ferry. This ferry departs directly, we are lucky. After only ten minutes on board we already moor on the opposite island Penang.

Penang has an eventful history, as it was once an important trading centre. From the 19th century onwards, a large number of Chinese emigrants settled in the port city of Georgetown, and to this day the city is marked by the influence of the resulting hybrid culture of the Peranakans. And the British have also left their traces from the colonial period.

In Georgetown

In order to get a taste of local history, I booked a room in a really cute little boutique hotel. The owner has arranged a few guest rooms in the original preserved family shophouse, while she still lives with her family on the first floor.

Unfortunately, our plan to comfortably walk around the little streets of the historic centre and sit comfortably in one of the many cafés fails. Titus is in such a bad mood – maybe because of the medication – that we take him back to our room after a quick dinner in a Pakistani restaurant and Norman leaves alone for a walk. Sometimes you just have to throw your plans overboard!

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
