Day Trip to Penang Hill / Ausflug zum Penang Hill

Deutsch / English

Was genau passiert ist, weiß keiner so genau.

A Day in Georgetown/Penang

In the morning Titus’ mood has changed completely, compared to the day before. So we venture to the Morning Market, warmly recommended by the hotel owner. We find a lively jumble of food stalls, bakerys and plastic tables, well frequented by locals of Chinese origin.

We skilfully order Kopi (coffee) and Baos (steamed yeast buns). At first Titus is not very satisfied with our choice of breakfast location, but then he can be convinced with three slices of delicious pandan cake. Thus strengthened, we start our way to the bus stop, where we board bus number 204.

We pay the fare of two Ringgit per person (children ride for free) and let ourselves be driven through Georgetown for about 45 minutes. On the streets you can see the remains of the Thaipusam festivities: In the early morning Hindu devotees make a pilgrimage with bare feet, bearing heavy wooden structures and piercing their skin in many creative ways.

Penang Hill

Soon we reach the valley station of the funicular railway that leads up to Penang Hill (or Bukit Bendera in Malay). Fortunately we are early enough, so that the rush is limited. The size and modern equipment of the station suggest that usually crowds of people are served here.

Standing right behind the front windshield we start our trip uphill. Over almost two kilometres of track, the 1923 built railway runs up to almost 800 metres above sea level. The train driver finds time to explain a few details about the route and the stops, and after a journey of just under twenty minutes we get off at the hill station.

Here, everything is designed for loads of tourists: There are photo spots and drink stalls, caricaturists, ice-cream and toy vendors, and and and. Above our heads, dusky leaf monkeys gymnastic through the treetops, and even Titus, usually not a monkey lover, finds their funny faces quite cute.

We escape and spend half an hour at the playground, which Titus explores extensively.

The Hindu temple right next to it impresses specially by its psychedelic colourfulness. After all, the view over Georgetown and Butterworth is quite nice.

Hiking Tour and Coffee Break

The law says that you must hike on a mountain. So we walk leisurely along a narrow driveway, along colourful greenery, flowers and palm-sized butterflies.

The hiking path is dominated by gorgeous, well-kept villas in colonial style, from whose window fronts one must have an overwhelming view. Apart from us, there are hardly any walkers on the way, instead, we have to sidestep the small golf carts that drive around lazy tourists every minute.

Titus is in such a good hiking mood today that we walk much further than planned and end up in the enchanting Monkeycup Cafe in the middle of the jungle. There, we get some refreshments and coffee, and Titus explores the huge fern and palm leaves, the hammock and the scorpions living in a terrarium.

The only thing he doesn’t like is the somewhat strange toilet in a hollowed tree trunk, as he doesn’t like squat toilets at all.

Descent and Bats Cave Temple

We let the café’s shuttle service take us back to the hill station and start the descent with the funicular railway. Titus is allowed to stand right at the front and is totally excited about the ride down the really steep slopes.

While at the top of the mountain there is a really very pleasant temperature combined with a slight breeze, at the bottom station it is unpleasantly hot. Nevertheless, we don’t let it get to us and march – if possible in the shade – one kilometre to the so-called Bat Cave Temple.

Titus once again explains how little he likes temples, but still lets himself be persuaded to visit. Inside, as promised, many, many small bats hang from the ceiling of an artificial cave, and a nice visitor lets his flashes his torch so that Titus can look at the animals even better.

Bus Ride with Obstacles

Afterwards we are looking forward to a relaxing bus ride back to the city, but it is only a short-lived rest. A few minutes after the departure, a deafening bang sounds, the bus brakes abruptly and after the bus driver has looked at the damage, we all have to alight the bus. Nobody knows exactly what happened. Fortunately, nobody was hurt and a spare bus arrives almost immediately.

Unhindered, we reach the centre of Georgetown after half an hour and are very happy about the beautiful day trip. While Titus and I take a short break in the hotel room and entertain the grandparents via video call, Norman takes care of annoying paperwork for the handling of our shipped container. Luckily, thanks to laptop, copy shop, cloud storage, WiFi and local SIM card, tasks like these can be handled from almost everywhere!

Incredible India

In the evening we enjoy excellent Thali and Naan in one of the many Indian restaurants. In Little India we feel like in India with all the hustle and bustle, the loud Bollywood music, the sari and bracelet shops and the intense smells. Norman and Titus, however, don’t enjoy it as much as I do.

In the Jalan Chulia, the bar and club street, we spontaneously stop for a beer in a nice bar. Titus immediately joins the French backpackers at the next table, who play UNO and invite him to join them. Of course, he can keep up with them immediately, and afterwards rips Norman and me off as usual.

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
