Tauchen auf Koh Tao / Diving at Koh Tao

Deutsch / English

The sound of the surf: Five days on Koh Tao

“Mummy, there aren’t any children here! I want to go back to the other island!” Bidding goodbye to his dear friends on Koh Phangan was a wrench. Titus is not pleased at all that we left that beautiful island. Only the beautiful pool right in front of our room makes him quite happy – and that he can watch the dive students during their first lessons while swimming.

New friendships

But as chance would have it, Titus makes friends on the second day with two German boys from the neighbouring hotel who are on a year-long trip around the world with their parents. The three get along very well, and are busy playing together from morning to night. Until late in the evening, to be precise, because their parents and we also take the opportunity to sit and chat together over a bottle of Chang beer. In one of the bars, a fire artist performs on the beach in the evening, juggling with burning sticks.

The children are enthusiastic – and he is even more so about the lively audience, which he even involves in his performance. The favourite pub has been found.

The bars and restaurants are otherwise relatively quiet. There are actually far fewer families here, but many more backpackers and above all divers. Koh Tao offers some of the supposedly best diving spots in Thailand.

Diving

Of course, we wouldn’t miss this for the world. Every noon around 12 o’clock one of us says goodbye and gets on the dive boat with the diving school Assava Divers. In my case Titus always stands on the beach and waves goodbye enthusiastically.

The sea is quite agitated at this time of the year, so the visibility under water is accordingly bad. The wreck of the HTMS Sattakut, former warship of the Thai Navy, sunk in 2011, looks like a ghost ship, when it appears from nowhere at a depth of a about 25 meters. In the captain’s cabin meter-long groupers have made themselves at home.

The neighbouring coral reef area of White Rock is home to man-sized puffer fish, stingrays, moray eels, anemone fish and grim-looking trigger fish, which can be very territorial during the breeding season, so divers should avoid getting too close.

Together with Titus I take a day off while Norman enthusiastically explores the underwater world. But to be honest, Titus is so busy with his two new friends that I can hardly persuade him to walk into the village for a snack in the early afternoon – and then to visit the small nail salon, where four Thai ladies sitting around and waiting for clients. Accordingly they are very dedicated to give us a pedicure.

Rainy weather

On my second day of diving it is raining cats and dogs from early morning. A tropical storm hits Koh Tao firmly, and we spend the morning doing puzzles, Lego and paperwork.

I’m quite happy that it is my turn to go on the dive boat at noon. Luckily, rain doesn’t bother while diving. However, the sea is quite agitated and I take a tablet against seasickness as a precaution. The dives are both very nice and relaxed – especially because I realize how much routine I have acquired over the last two years, compared to the others in my group, who are obviously pretty new to diving. Strong currents, poor visibility, balancing air supply, buoyancy – no problem at all.

Snorkeling

The rain continues until the next morning, when the sun comes back. Half of the beach has been washed away, the children are delighted with this proof of the forces of nature. And finally we seize the last opportunity to snorkeling. Titus and I are allowed to join the dive boat where we watch the divers getting ready for the first dive.

Meanwhile Titus and I jump into the water with mask, snorkel and life jacket and try to discover at least a few fish in the murky sea. At least we find some anemone fish, zebra fish, huge sea urchins and sea cucumbers. But soon Titus is shivering in his short wetsuit, so we swim back to the boat and I infuse the freezing child a cup of hot tea with lots of sugar. Then we welcome the divers back and spend the time of their second dive comfortably lying on deck.

And even more friendships

Back on land Titus is expecting a surprise. When he finished a hot shower, his little friend Anna, whom he met on Koh Phangan, is waiting for him at the door of our bungalow. In the meantime the family has also arrived at Koh Tao and is paying us a farewell visit for dinner. The children are happy and smiling at each other all evening – and the two “new” German boys and their parents join all of us later that night. This makes an enjoyable evening at the beach bar. Until almost half past ten the children romp across the sand, a few Japanese tourists play tag with them, the Thai staff are also more than willing to play with the kids, and Titus falls asleep back in the bungalow almost immediately.

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
