School for Life, Chiang Mai

Deutsch / English

Ankunft in Chiang Mai

School for Life: Schule und Kinderheim

Mehr Details dazu findet Ihr hier: School for Life.

Arriving in Chiang Mai

“Coffee, coffee!”, it echoes through the compartment just after sunrise. The feisty train attendant only knows a few English words, but she trumpets them confidently through the corridors. Regardless of the many passengers still sleeping, she offers the breakfast service – which arrives just in time. Contrary to me (thanks to Titus who is like a hot-water bottle), Norman was freezing during the night and is happy about the hot coffee that we get served together with a complete breakfast tray. That this costs a fortune, we only find out when we pay the bill.

As the train is late, we can start the morning calmly. We sip the coffee, while bit by bit all passengers wake up. Titus is still asleep in his bunk. It is already after 9 o’clock when I wake him up.

Together we enjoy the view over the green hills and rice fields outside. After almost twelve hours on the train and 750 kilometres north of Ayutthaya we reach Chiang Mai shortly after 10 o’clock. At the train station, Conny picks us up on behalf of the School for Life.

School for Life: School and Children’s Home

We take a seat in the open mini-van and drive for a good hour out of town and into the forests of Doi Saket in north-eastern Chiang Mai. It is noticeably dry season, it is dusty and bone-dry, and the partly unfinished asphalted roads mean that we are covered with a layer of dust until we turn into the school grounds.

“School for Life was founded in 2003 and is an internationally sponsored project in Thailand that provides home and care for children who live in difficult situations. In the beginning the main target-group were Aids-orphans, but meanwhile many children with diverse other backgrounds came to live in School for Life: among them are children who lost their relatives in the Tsunami; children whose parents were killed or are missing, and children who escaped from situations of brutality and abuse. School for Life provides for their basic needs, offers psychosocial and medical care, and a new home, aims to make the best possible education available to them, and respects their right to a happy childhood.
The almost thirty buildings in the middle of the forest form a learning intensive village, an “open learning village” with a farmhouse, family houses, classrooms, a canteen, an assembly hall, accommodation for the team, guest bungalows, sports facilities and farmland. […] It is a spacious complex that extends from a hill down the valley to a small river. And that means: lots of space for the children!”

More details can be found here: http://school-for-life.org/

About 120-150 children between the age of 3 and 17 live here, go to school and are looked after by a team of teachers and volunteers. The entire project is based on donations. In order to generate some additional income, there are also a few guesthouses which are open to visitors. Our accommodation is spacious and comfortable, and as we are currently the only guests, we also have the entire dining and recreation area to ourselves. As the next village is quite a distance away, you can have a complete meal here for a small amount of money.

We feel very comfortable here in the middle of nature, and Titus also immediately goes on an exploration tour and makes friends with the German volunteers who work here for a few months after graduating from school. After a short tour of the classrooms and the residential buildings, Titus joins the afternoon project: Together with fifteen children he bakes banana muffins and explores the cupboard with the board games. Unfortunately most of them are incomplete. The large sports field is much more exciting. Devoted and persistent, all the children play here until well after dark.

About us / Über uns

We are a family of three: Norman, Titus (*2014) and Nadine. Tested by travel and infested with wanderlust, we dared to embark on the adventure of traveling from Singapore to Munich – overland by public transport. Until Covid-19 thwarted our plans – but it couldn’t stop us…

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
