Chiang Mai – Chiang Rai

Deutsch / English

From Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai by Bus

The ear infection seems to be much better after two days. Only when putting on and taking off his T-shirt Titus insists on doing it himself. In the morning after waking up he demands: “Ear drops, please!” and then lays down again for another 20 minutes (or the length of a children’s podcast) until they have taken effect long enough.

Early in the afternoon we drive to the bus station and, after we’ve had a few snacks, board the waiting bus with the destination of Chiang Rai. After some research about safety and comfort I booked tickets for the VIP bus of the Green Bus line. Accordingly “luxurious” is the equipment.

  • Comfortable, wide seats, adjustable in all directions
  • screen at the front seat – unfortunately the media offer is only available in Thai
  • A stewardess looks after the passengers and serves water and a snack
  • There’s a security video similar to the one on the plane

To the far north of Thailand

Apart from that the trip is not very spectacular, there is not much to see except rice fields. For the 190 kilometres the ride takes almost four hours, but this is mainly due to the fact that there are many road works on the way; the already quite good road is extended by additional lanes. So the road is bumpy now and then, but that doesn’t bother us. We listen to audio books, podcasts and music, Titus shares the soundtrack of “Frozen” and “Frozen 2” with the rest of the passengers.

Around 4 pm we arrive at the small bus station of Chiang Rai. Chiang Rai with its 70.000 inhabitants is located in the middle of the famous Golden Triangle between Laos and Myanmar in the middle of the mountains. The city centre is quite small and to our accommodation it takes only a few minutes of walking from the bus station.

A bungalow just for us

We are pleasantly surprised: Baan Jaru is a wonderful guesthouse, where we move into our own bungalow, which is lovingly and at the same time traditionally and modern furnished. The living room/bedroom is lavishly large, there are seats and enough space to spread out. But the best thing is the family bed: on a small gallery, mattresses lie side by side in such a way that even five people could sleep here without bothering each other.

After we have settled in, our host recommends to visit the night market that is supposed to be specially worth seeing on Saturday. It is only a ten minutes walk, and on our way we pass one of the sights, the golden shining clock tower.

Saturday Night Market

At the night market, there are miles and miles of stalls offering astonishingly beautiful handicrafts from the many hill tribes. The usual cheap souvenir market stuff is not to be found here. If we had space in our backpack, I would probably hit it. But at least we taste the culinary specialities and eat ourselves for little money across the food stalls. We test Miang Kham, a typical snack found in northern Thailand: nuts, ginger, garlic, lime, shallots are wrapped in a fresh leaf of a pepper plant and eaten in one bite. Very refreshing!

From Sushi to grilled vegetables, Pad Thai, Chinese Hot Pot, grilled beetles of all kinds, fresh fish, fruit juices, … there is delicious food for everyone.

Right in the middle of the market is the city square, where a big stage has been erected. A band plays obviously famous Thai hits (?). The older and later also younger fellow citizens of Chiang Rai shake a leg and hit the dance floor, and Titus is very keen to join them. Wherever I look, I see only friendly faces. They carry chairs for us and ask us to sit down and watch the dancers.

It’s fun to watch the colourful hustle and bustle; many locals wear the various costumes of the different hill tribes that live around Chiang Rai. Unfortunately, the music is so deafeningly loud that we start our way home – and sleep very well in our huge bed!

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
