Chiang Rai: Ausflüge und Sehenswertes/ Things to see and do

Deutsch / English

Chiang Rai Night Market

Lieblingscafés in Chiang Rai

Deutsch / English

Chiang Rai: Things to do and see

“I don’t want to go to any temple.” We hear this sentence quite often, as mentioned earlier, Titus despises temples. Norman had a hard time to convince him to pay the White Temple a visit, which is one of the main attractions of Chiang Rai.

It is only possible after we agree together to put in a few favourite activities in advance. This includes sports. I do gymnastics as often as I can with the help of a fitness app – and Titus is always joining me. Our bungalow is big enough for us to jump, run and lie on the floor. Meanwhile Norman is struggling with the PC, because the internet connection is lousy.

Singha Park

In order to continue to show mercy to the child, we first take a Grab taxi to Singha Park, which is a little outside of Chiang Rai. This gigantic green area was created with financial means of the Singha brewery group. There are bicycle rentals, a small zoo, several lakes, several agricultural displays for fruit, vegetables and tea, playgrounds and other entertainment for young and old.

Our plan to explore the area by bike doesn’t work because there is apparently no child seat – and Titus is unfortunately not yet firm enough to ride by himself. So we book the tour with the electric bus, which takes us to the main attractions for a good hour and makes stops everywhere.

It is hot and shade is only sparsely available. This is why I am not at all disappointed that we are not allowed to pedal by ourselves. Instead we are allowed to taste at many stations: fresh oolong tea and blueberries are obviously so good that Titus would love to ask for some more. And the short detour to see giraffes, zebras, buffalos and especially ponies is of course great.

Afterwards we have to cool down in the café and taste iced coffee and some cake. Here it costs five times as much as at the food stall across the street, where we enjoyed a quick lunch of noodle soup.

White Temple

After this refreshment, we go again by Grab to the already mentioned White Temple (Wat Rong Khun). Strictly speaking it is not a “real” temple at all – but an art installation of the Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. At first sight everything looks like a Buddhist temple complex, but on closer inspection one discovers the artistic freedom. In the wall paintings, Buddha sits next to Harry Potter and the Minions, outside there are statues like from a horror movie, at the fountain the Ninja Turtles are standing next to Ganesh, … We’re having a lot of fun exploring all of this weird exhibition. Completely crazy, such a temple is quite entertaining!

Chiang Rai Night Market

At the end of the day we visit the regular Night Market, which takes place every evening from 6 pm until late in Chiang Rai’s centre. Market stalls with handicrafts and souvenirs are spread over several streets, in the middle there is the food court. It is not quite as busy as the weekend market, and it is obvious that it is both low season and the Chinese tourists are missing, too.

Titus is allowed to get a portion of ice cream rolls from the ice cream parlour. That’s his choice for dinner, the food offer does not appeal to him very much, and I also content myself with a fresh coconut. Norman would like to install a counter here on the blog that shows how many coconuts I have already eaten…

Cafés in Chiang Rai

Furthermore, Chiang Rai has so many nice cafés that we keep treat ourselves often with delicious coffee (me) and cake (Titus). The absolute favourite café of Titus is CatNaCup. Again a cat café, as the name already suggests. This time, however, it is really cosy and serves wonderful coffee and a supposedly very tasty cheesecake. The nearly 30 pretty cats, which are enjoying themselves around us or rather dozing, are not too interested in us, but they are still nice to look at.

And Norman is showing off with the surely most beautiful café of the city: Chivit Thamma Da Coffee House is picturesquely situated at the river. The old villa in which the café is located is lovingly preserved and furnished in the style of the colonial era. Although the prices are steep, the portions are huge and the garden is a wonderful place to sit and spend the afternoon and/or evening. Unfortunately, this is not granted to us. As nice as we find it here, Titus criticizes the lack of play possibilities and companions and urges to leave much too early…

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
