Chiang Rai: Trekking Tour

Deutsch / English

Chiang Rai: Trekking Tour

Chiang Rai: Trekking Tour

The next day is just to Titus’s taste: we go hiking! At 9 a.m. the boss of Lanna Trek, where we spontaneously booked this day trip, picks us up by car and drives us 20 kilometres north-west. As soon as we have left the city centre of Chiang Rai, we are in the middle of nature. A few villages line the increasingly narrow path, on the slopes of the hills lychees, pineapples, bananas and other tropical fruits grow in well-ordered rows.

After about half an hour we stop at a parking lot for hikers, where our guide is already waiting for us and hands Titus and me a bamboo trekking pole. The son will not put it out of his hand during the whole day – there’s so much to do with such a thing!

We start walking immediately. For almost two hours we walk uphill, some parts are quite steeply. Fortunately, most of the hike is in the shade and it is not too hot yet. As soon as we have left the tropical forest and crossed a creek (a bamboo stick is very helpful here, too!), we have a reasonably good view. The land is completely dried out at the moment, there is dust in the air and the fields are lying fallow. The rainy season is longed for, according to our guide is has never been so dry before.

He knows his way around well, as he comes from a neighbouring village. Calmly he marches ahead, points every now and then to special plants, large spider webs, and with his impressively sharp machete he keeps cutting off leaves and bamboo sticks from which he makes the most exciting things. He shows us the sacrificial places where the locals leave small handicrafts for the good spirits. Titus marches and marches, only needs a drinking break and a small snack every now and then, but is very satisfied and chatters incessantly.

At noon we reach the small village of Lahu. Just in time, because now it is getting hot. Here practically everything is made of the almost infinitely renewable material bamboo. Huts, furniture, ladders, stables for goats and chickens, … The latter march freely through the village, as do the many dogs.

In one of the huts the owner serves a delicious lunch of banana blossom soup, rice, fried eggplants, omelette and hot chili paste. Titus gets fresh popcorn and pineapple for dessert. So satiated, we take a long break and Titus enthusiastically explores our new drinking cups – made of bamboo, of course. Luckily we can fill up our water supplies here, because with this heat all bottles are empty.

Around 1 p.m. we start our way back. For almost an hour we fight our way through a dense bamboo forest in scorching heat. The path is barely visible, the plants shed almost all their leaves in the persistent dryness. Moreover, it is partly so narrow that especially Titus has to walk very concentrated and even falls silent for a while. When I start to feel that I never want to see bamboo again in my life, we reach a clearing, then we continue downhill through “normal” forest until we finally hear the splashing of the river.

After a total of two hours of descent we reach the Mae Sai Waterfall, where we immediately take off our hiking boots and cool our hot feet in the cold river. And again our guide comes up with a great construction: with a hollowed out bamboo cane he makes a kind of water tap. Titus enthusiastically helps to reinforce the existing small dam and water gushes out of the pipe. Perfect for washing your hands!

It is only a short walk from the waterfall back to the parking lot. There our driver is already waiting for us and say goodbye to our really very friendly and experienced hiking guide. On the way back to Chiang Rai we are all quiet and have to recover from the long hike. Around 4 p.m. we are back at our accommodation and very enthusiastic: It was a really great day trip, we were the only hikers far and wide and found it exciting to visit a Thai mountain village.

And Titus will explain to you in the next post in a video what you can do with bamboo!

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
