Unternehmungen rund um Luang Prabang / Activities around Luang Prabang

Deutsch / English

Deutsch / English

Day trip from Luang Prabang

Norman has sore muscles from knife making in his arms and hands and would like to have a quiet day. But Titus is pushing for a day trip, and I too have a great desire to do something. The majority decides, and so we take a tuktuk after breakfast – this time a roadworthy one – and drive in the already dry morning heat almost 30 kilometres along the Mekong to the southeast. Since we came from the humid tropics to the dusty regions of northern Thailand and Laos, my skin, which has been wonderfully smooth for three years without any moisturizing care, has been going crazy again and is constantly drying out…

Buffalo Dairy Farm

The ride is surprisingly entertaining, there is so much to see along the way. Soon we have left the urbanity of Luang Prabang. Withered, harvested rice fields stand directly next to fields where the rice grows juicy green. Buffalo and cows graze at the roadside, chickens run across the road and dogs doze lazily in the shade. The road leads us up and down through narrow hairpin bends until we stop at Buffalo Dairy Farm after a good half hour.

This non-profit farm keeps farm animals and teaches local farmers about animal welfare and sustainable farming. In addition, milk and milk powder are distributed to local families and hospitals, and classes about nutrition and hygiene are held to combat malnutrition, which is particularly alarming among Laotian children. To finance this project, visitors are allowed to visit the farm, which means that we get a guided tour for a few thousand Kip. Titus is very excited: he is allowed to feed rabbits, pet huge pigs and even milk a buffalo cow and feed the almost one-year-old calves with a milk bottle.

On the farm they have specialized in breeding and crossbreeding the buffaloes that live here. We have great fun with this experience in the country air! At the end of the tour we are allowed to taste some of the products in the in-house café: yoghurt drink, vanilla ice cream and cheesecake, all made from buffalo milk. Delicious!

Kuang Si Waterfall

Our driver has waited patiently for us in the burning midday heat and takes us to the Kuang Si waterfall six kilometres away. It is a main tourist attraction, already on the road there are street vendors lining up. Norman finds a hidden hiking trail, which leads us through dense forest at a distance to the waterfall. But then it is really worth seeing how it pours over the rocks in dozens of water basins.

In them, one can have a bath, something Norman and Titus of course won’t miss. The little fishes in them nibble at them, and soon it is too ticklish.

On the way back we watch the cubs, which were freed from captivity and now live here in the bear sanctuary. Bear bile is still a very popular and sought-after remedy in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which is why thousands of bears are kept and “milked” in tight cages like living pantries, sometimes for decades. The Free the Bears organisation, which keeps the liberated animals in a large area and tries to release them back into the wild, is fighting against this.

Butterfly Park

Right next to the hustle and bustle around the waterfall, just one bend below the food and souvenir stalls, we hop off the tuktuk again and visit the Butterfly Park. In contrast to the waterfall, the beautiful garden in the middle of the tropical forest is a place of peace and, except for us, there are only a handful of visitors. Between the almost unnaturally colourful flowers, more than thirty different species of butterflies flutter around here. A great sight! We see cocoons and caterpillars and hang our feet in the small pond where small cleaner fish nibble off some dead skin.

In the in-house café Titus is allowed to feed the huge carps and afterwards he eats a big piece of apple pie. We enjoy the homely atmosphere between cats, ducks and dogs, and the coffee is also strong and good. Absolutely worth a visit!

It is already 4 pm until we arrive back in Luang Prabang – highly satisfied with the varied excursion. While Norman replenishes our supplies in the supermarket, I drop Titus off at the only barbershop in town, where he gets a long overdue haircut from a young, very nervous barber who unfortunately doesn’t speak a word of English. Nevertheless, the result is as desired, and with this last official act and a final visit to the Night Market, where I drink the probably biggest coconut of Southeast Asia, our last day in Luang Prabang comes to an end.

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
