Jinghong – Kunming

Deutsch / English

Stadtbesichtigung in Jinghong

Ankunft in Kunming

Jinghong – Kunming

We need the next day in Jinghong to recover from two really exhausting and sometimes nerve-racking days of travel. Fortunately our family room is so big and comfortable that we can easily pass the time there. The latest new acquisition – a yoga mat – is used, the washing machine, which is conveniently in the room, is turned on and the last Laotian dust from clothes and the soft toy is washed away. To use the washing machine we need the help of the translation app. Titus helps diligently to hang up the laundry, we are once again very happy to have our own clothesline.

City tour in Jinghong

From the large panorama window we look out on the craziest buildings: ultra-modern skyscrapers are partly still under construction, the Mekong Bridge spans the river at a dizzy height. But at the same time everything seems to be extinct: Construction sites lie idle, half of the shops are closed and during the day few people are out and about.

Nevertheless, in the afternoon we go for an extensive walk along the Mekong, we stroll through parks and along the main roads. There is a much more activity there, but it is still wonderfully quiet, because the main means of transport here are electric scooters that buzz back and forth silently. There are separate lanes for bicycles and scooters next to the six-lane roads with curbs, and we tell Titus that he cannot rely on his hearing here, but has to look carefully.

Except for a small coffee bar, where we are allowed to sit on the terrace, we find again only closed restaurants. So we give in to the urging of our son and again visit the supermarket and have a picnic in the hotel room.

Do as the locals do

The next morning we have breakfast in a tiny restaurant next to the hotel, with typical yeast dough dumplings and hot, spicy noodle soup. Then our friendly host drives us to the bus station again and says goodbye to us warmly. He even organized three additional breathing masks for us, which are actually strictly rationed. Now we have a replacement, should ours get dirty or break.

In the meantime, after observing the locals we have understood that every time you enter a building you have to scan a QR code with your mobile phone. When leaving, one scans again, so the responsible authority knows immediately who was at which place and when. They use this information to find out who might also have been infected in case of a new infection. So we learned that skill quickly and are allowed to go to the bus immediately.

Bus trip to Kunming

At 10 o’clock the journey to Kunming starts. We make ourselves comfortable, the coach has wide seats with plenty of legroom. We interpret the harsh-sounding announcement of the bus driver correctly: Fasten the seat belt is mandatory. At first, we proceed with a lot of stops where people get in and especially goods are loaded. This is the reason why our bus repeatedly leaves the motorway and enters it again and again. Like two days ago, we drive along striking mountains, still over bridges without too many curves. Dense forest grows on the slopes, according to the signs there are supposed to be wild elephants here.

At 13 o’clock we have a lunch break at a rather shabby little restaurant. The toilet is frightening: only a tiled gutter on the floor, no cabins, but bashfully crouching next to each other.

On the way we pass Pu-Erh, where the famous tea is grown. The landscape changes in general, instead of mountains we cross wide flat areas. For hours we only see agricultural areas for rice and vegetables of all kinds as well as greenhouses as far as the eye can see. The province Yunnan, through which we drive, apparently supplies half of China with its products.

Titus enjoys the comfortable ride, he sings, eats, listens to audio books and music, writes poems, does calculations and spelling quizzes and seems to be very satisfied. Norman and I take turns with him, and I can listen to an audio book and podcasts for hours. We can still see sections of the new train line – it’s hard to imagine that in the future you can complete this three-day journey in just a few hours.

Arrival in Kunming

After almost nine hours in the bus we finally reach Kunming, 600 kilometres north of Jinghong. The sun is already low in the sky when we stretch our legs at the bus station. Once again our temperature is measured. Outside we are already expected: The nephew of a work colleague of Norman’s was sent by the family to receive us. The young man, let us call him Johnny, speaks English.

Together with his wife, he not only drives us to our accommodation on the other side of town, but when we arrive there, he also showered us with presents: rose biscuits, cookies and probably the most perfect strawberries. The whole thing must have cost a fortune. Unfortunately our invitation for dinner is cancelled because all restaurants are still closed.

We move into a family room in the Upload International Youth Hostel. Norman has wisely decided for this accommodation, because here at the reception they also speak English – that is not self-evident here in southwest China. The room is cheap and just right for us, with a double bed and above it a single bunk bed, which of course is immediately occupied by Titus. The two gentlemen leave in search of something to eat and come back with instant noodle soup and French fries. After the long day in the bus nobody is really hungry anyway and we prefer to make ourselves comfortable in bed early. Fortunately, the air conditioning in the room can also be used for heating – because it’s very cold here in Kunming, which is at an altitude of almost 2,000 meters!

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
