Zwei Tage in Kunming / Two Days in Kunming

Deutsch / English

Zwei Tage in Kunming

Unser zweiter Tag in Kunming verläuft ähnlich unspektakulär.

Two days in Kunming

Before getting up we first have to turn on the heater/air conditioning again. The nights are cold in Kunming. Only then it gets warm enough in the room to leave the cozy bed. Titus already climbs up and down his bunk bed and is completely in love with this room.

For breakfast we sit down in the lounge, the face mask is of course always with us, even if there are only a few guests – and not a single foreigner – to be seen apart from us. Also the kitchen of the hostel is closed, but we are reasonably well equipped with our own cereal, UHT milk and instant coffee. Titus makes friends with the two cats lying in the sun on the terrace, while Norman and I struggle with the internet connection. Unfortunately it does not work and we give up, unnerved.

Running Errands

Instead Norman shoos us to the station, we have to check if our tickets are already available for collection. We use the public bus very professionally, thanks to offline maps and scout Norman. At the station entrance we are strictly controlled, we scan the QR Code, have our small backpack X-rayed and march to the ticket counter. Really everyone around here wear face masks and keep their distance to each other as much as possible.

Also in the taxi, in which we sit down afterwards, we have to register before boarding. We drive to the other end of the city – and are amazed when we get out: we pay a paltry 2 euros for the ride. In the brand-new, big, unfortunately almost completely abandoned shopping centre, at least the sports equipment shop is open. There we stock up with warm clothes: Fleece jackets and gloves for everyone, Titus gets new hiking pants and new hiking boots. At the cash desk again great amazement: the international chain is clearly cheaper in China than for example in Singapore or in Germany.

The search for a coffee, on the other hand, turns out to be fruitless. Only a handful of shops are open, and none of them sell coffee. This is because coffee is not very popular in China. So we go back to the hostel, where we spend the rest of the afternoon setting up the usual payment systems (WeChatPay, AliPay) and register with the largest food delivery service. Unfortunately the app is only in Chinese, so we need the translation software for every step. In the end, Norman actually manages to order three pizzas (we could identify them without any errors from the pictures), which are delivered only a few minutes later – and taste amazingly good!

Walk around the Green Lake

Our second day in Kunming was similarly unspectacular. We are not in the mood for excursions, so we spend the morning in the hostel, where Titus spends round after round with Norman at the billiard table. I don’t give up the search for a coffee – and thanks to the advice of the hostel receptionist I make a find: There’s exactly one single open branch of a coffee chain within walking distance. So I grab Titus and find the place. There, we are critically eyed, our temperature is measured and of course they insist on the entrance scan, but then they give us coffee and cake. The restaurant does not invite to sit down and unfortunately, the coffee does not taste very good either.

We get picked up by Norman and – like the rest of the population of Kunming, a city of seven million people – we take a walk in the warm afternoon sun around the Green Lake. The park of the lake itself is closed, the entrances are guarded by stern looking policemen, but the promenade is open and hosts of locals enjoy the springlike temperatures.

The cherry trees are in full bloom, and if not everyone wore face masks, one could almost be surprised that there are not many more tourists around. But so we are far and wide the only non-Chinese.

To Lijiang by Sleeper Train

After another successful dinner delivery to the hostel we make our way again to the central station. The station is even more closed than the day before, but we can get in unhindered. In anticipatory obedience we left Titus’ self-made knife with a heavy heart, because the luggage controls are as strict as at international airports and won’t allow knifes.

The online ticket order worked perfectly, after checking our passports we were let through to the waiting hall. There we practice numbers from 1 to 9 in Chinese with the help of the rattling loudspeaker announcements. The waiting hall is well filled, most of the trains are running again like before COVID-19. We supply ourselves with drinking water and brush our teeth in the reasonably clean washroom.

Twenty minutes before the departure of our train we are allowed to walk through a gate and to the track – similar to the airport. The train to Lijiang is ready for boarding, and we move into an unexpectedly comfortable four-person compartment (Soft Sleeper), which we luckily have all to ourselves.

The train conductor unfortunately cannot communicate with us, but as usual she meticulously checks our passports and asks for our last whereabouts. The train starts at 20:56 o’clock, and on good persuasion Titus climbs into his bed (the upper one, of course) and falls asleep quite soon. We manage to switch off the loudspeaker on the ceiling of the compartment, through which tediuos announcements in Chinese alternate with pop and classical music. I too am tired and fall asleep quickly to the rattle of the train tracks.

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
