Chengdu – Xi’an

Abreise aus Chengdu

Beim Packen der Rucksäcke am Vormittag sortieren wir aus: Titus ist aus Hosen, Socken und Langarmshirts rausgewachsen, und auch in meinem T-Shirt-Fundus gibt es das eine oder andere Stück, das nach vielen Wäschen nun seinen Abschied nehmen kann. Trotzdem sind die Rucksäcke prall gefüllt, wir haben aber auch noch ein paar Panda-Souvenirs erstanden, die wir dringend als Erinnerung an Chengdu mitnehmen möchten.

Am Straßenstand gegenüber holt Norman noch ein paar Sesamkringel als Reiseproviant und ersteht eine neue Ladung Atemschutzmasken. Dann verabschieden wir uns von den netten Damen an der Rezeption und fahren mit dem Taxi zum Ostbahnhof. Auf dem Weg staunen wir über den wahren Wald von gleichförmigen Hochhäusern, die außerhalb des Stadtzentrums die Autobahn säumen. Wohnraum für Millionen von Menschen, und die vielen Baustellen zeugen von ungebrochenem Boom.

Wie fast schon erwartet, ist der Bahnhof in seinen Ausmaßen mit einer Messehalle vergleichbar. Hier ist alles bestens durchorganisiert: Temperaturcheck per Wärmekamera am Eingang, Pass- und Gepäckkontrolle, und schon dürfen wir zum Gate.

Der erste Sesamkringel ist bereits verspeist, als zum „Boarding“ aufgerufen wird. Auch hier werden die Pässe eingescannt, und der Durchgang zum Bahnsteig öffnet sich.

Im Schnellzug nach Norden

Im Zug nehmen wir die reservierten Plätze ein und fahren – wie erwartet – Punkt 12:39 Uhr ab. Die Anzeige über unseren Köpfen zeigt eine Geschwindigkeit von 243 km/h an, mit der wir nordwärts donnern. Nach einer Stunde Fahrzeit sind wir mitten in den Bergen angekommen, und bei jedem der aberhundert Tunnel knacken die Ohren. Die Zugbegleiterin bittet uns nervös per ÜBersetzungs-App, nach der Ankunft bitte mit den Behörden zu kooperieren und uns für eine Befragung bereitzuhalten. Wir beruhigen sie, schließlich haben wir das nun schon oft genug mitgemacht…

Um kurz vor 17 Uhr, nach gut vier Stunden Fahrt und knapp 700 zurückgelegten Kilometern fahren wir am Bahnhof von Xi’an ein. Es ist ja immer schön, wenn man bei der Ankunft am Bahnsteig erwartet wird. Hier werden wir von mehreren Uniformierten und ein paar Beamten in voller Seuchenschutzmontur in Empfang genommen und durch die riesige Bahnhofshalle eskortiert.

Dort werden wir eine halbe Stunde lang zu unseren Stationen in China befragt, zum Glück kann Norman mit sämtlichen Zugtickets aufwarten. Zig Mal werden Pässe und Einreisestempel fotografiert, immerhin kann einer der Polizisten gut Englisch. Es ist kalt in Xian, eindeutig sind wir wieder ein ganzes Stück nördlich gelandet. Nicht nur wir frösteln in der zugigen Halle, auch die vielen stationierten Polizisten sehen ziemlich verfroren aus.

Mit Hilfe eines ebenfalls Englisch sprechenden Mitarbeiters schaffen wir es, uns in der für die Provinz Shaanxi gültige „Health App“ zu registrieren. Jede einzelne Provinz in China scheint ein eigenes Überwachungssystem zu verwenden, und jede davon ist ausschließlich auf Chinesisch verfügbar. Nach erfolgreich Registrierung dürfen wir mit „grünem Code“ (im Moment gesundheitlich unbedenklich) endlich unserer Wege ziehen.

Erste Eindrücke

Am Taxistand müssen wir gleich mal genau diesen Code vorzeigen, bis wir zu einem freien Wagen gewunken werden. Unser Hotelbesitzer gibt per Telefon dem Fahrer die Wegbeschreibung durch, und wir dürfen einsteigen. Der Fahrer hat den vorderen Teil des Innenraums großflächig mit einer Plastikfolie „virensicher“ abgedichtet und vom Rücksitz getrennt. Das ist zwar löblich, führt aber dazu, dass die Lüftung nur vorne bei ihm funktioniert. Wir sitzen dagegen hinten im übelsten Knoblauchdunst aller Zeiten, und trotz der Kälte öffne ich das Fenster weit. Für die 15 Kilometer bis in die von einer dicken Stadtmauer umgebenen Altstadt brauchen wir über 40 Minuten, der Abendverkehr ist dicht.

Wir werden bereits vom Hotelbesitzer erwartet, der uns in seinem hübschen Häuschen willkommen heißt und uns ein nettes Zimmer mit kleinem Extrageschoss zuweist. Das „Zimmerchen“, das über eine steile Treppe zu erreichen ist, wird sofort von Titus erobert, der es zu seinem Schlafdomizil erklärt. Bevor wir uns allzu häuslich einrichten, dränge ich zum Aufbruch, denn es ist längst Abend und wir haben alle Hunger. Beim Verdauungsspaziergang, der uns nach dem langen Sitzen im Zug guttut, weht uns eisiger Wind ins Gesicht, und es ist wirklich lästig, dass die Brille durch den Mundschutz dauernd beschlägt.

Als Schlummertrunk gönnen wir uns im Zimmer noch einen Schluck sehr gewöhnungsbedürftigen Bijou – der chinesische Schnaps gehört hier zu jedem Essen und Treffen mit Freunden dazu. Immerhin wärmt er von innen.

Departure from Chengdu

When packing the backpacks in the morning we have to reduce our baggage: Titus has outgrown trousers, socks and long-sleeved shirts, and also amongst my T-shirts there are one or two pieces that I can no longer wear after too many rounds in the washing machine. Nevertheless, the backpacks are full to bursting, however, we have also still bought a few panda souvenirs which we would like to take home as a memory of Chengdu.

At the roadside stall across the road Norman buys some sesame rings as snack for the journey and a new load of face masks at the pharmacy. Then we say goodbye to the nice ladies at the hotel reception and take a taxi to the east station. On the way we marvel at the “forest-like”, uniform high-rise buildings that line the motorway outside the city centre. Living space for millions of people, and the many construction sites testify to an unbroken boom.

As almost expected, the station is comparable in its dimensions to an exhibition hall. Everything here is perfectly organized: Temperature check by thermal camera at the entrance, passport and baggage control, and we’re off to the gate. The first ring of sesame seeds is already eaten when the call for “boarding” is made. Here, too, the passports are scanned and the passage to the platform opens.

By express train up north

On the train we take the reserved seats and leave – as expected – at 12:39 pm sharp. The indicator above our heads shows a speed of 243 km/h, with which we rush northwards. After an hour’s journey we arrive in the middle of the mountains, and our ears crackle in each of the hundreds of tunnels. The train conductor nervously asks us via translation app to cooperate with the authorities after arrival and to be ready for questioning. We calm her down, after all we have been through this often enough…

Shortly before 5 pm, after a good four hours and almost 700 kilometres, we arrive at the central station of Xi’an. It is always nice to have a welcoming committee at the platform upon arrival. Here we are met by several policemen and a few officials in full epidemic protection gear and escorted through the huge station hall.

There we are questioned for half an hour about our travel destinations in China, luckily Norman can provide all train tickets. Passports and entry stamps are photographed umpteen times, at least one of the policemen speaks good English. It is cold in Xian, clearly we have come a long way north again. Not only we shiver in the draughty hall, also the many stationed policemen look quite cold.

With the help of an also English speaking employee we manage to register in the “Health App” which is valid for the province of Shaanxi. Every single province in China seems to use its own surveillance and tracking system, all of them are only available in Chinese. After a successful registration, we are finally allowed to go our own way with “green code” (which means “healthy” at the moment).

First impressions

At the taxi stand we have to show exactly this code until we are waved to a free car. Our hotel owner gives the driver directions by phone and we are allowed to take a seat. The driver has sealed the front part of the interior extensively with a plastic foil and tried to make it “virus-proof” by separating it from the back seat. This is laudable, but it means that the ventilation only works in the front. In contrast, we sit in the back in the worst garlic haze ever, and despite the cold, I open the window wide. For the 15 kilometres to the old town, which is surrounded by a thick city wall, we need more than 40 minutes, the evening traffic is heavy.

We are already expected by the hotel owner, who welcomes us in his nice little house and assigns us a nice room with a small extra floor. The “little room”, which can be reached over a steep staircase, is immediately conquered by Titus, who declares it his sleeping chamber. Before we make ourselves too comfy, I urge us to leave, because it is already evening and we are all hungry. During the digestive walk, which is good for us after sitting in the train for so long, an icy wind blows in our faces, and it is really annoying that the glasses are constantly fogging up because of the mandatory face mask.

As a nightcap, we allow ourselves a sip of a very unaccustomed bijou in our room – the Chinese schnapps is part of every meal and meeting with friends. After all it warms from the inside.

Leider machte uns Covid-19 einen Strich durch die Rechnung, aber wir ließen uns nicht aufhalten…

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.
