More about our days in Xi’an

Deutsch / English

Besichtigungen

More about our days in Xi’an

The week in Xi’an is full of wonderful new experiences. After a cloudy sky in the first few days, with a kind of smog that hides the sun, it clears up from Wednesday onwards, and we are welcomed with bright sunshine for breakfast every day. The temperature rises to midsummery degrees, and the down jackets can stay in the room. So we try to find as many outdoor activities as possible:

Sightseeing

Besides the city wall, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is one of the main attractions of Xi’an. Why it’s called goose pagoda we unfortunately cannot figure out. And we can only see it from a distance, because it is closed. Many attractions, hotels and public buildings use this special, quiet time to carry out long planned renovation works. Anyway, there is also some renovation work going on at the Goose Pagoda and we only stroll through the park belonging to it.

In general, some attractions are denied to us: we do not manage to get access to both the bell and drum tower or the evening light and dance show at the city wall, as the registration app does not allow foreigners. The same is true for the Tang Paradise, a park that according to the descriptions is particularly worth seeing – in which crowds of locals flock, but unfortunately we have to stay outside.

The Shaanxi Nature Museum is open for us, but in the round building that is so impressive from the outside, a rather disappointing children’s exhibition awaits us, in which more than half of the exhibits are out of service and the other half has clearly seen better times. The appendant area including the TV tower is more impressive, and also the exhibition with dinosaurs and other animals seemed to be exciting.

We let ourselves drift through the streets along the residential areas that come to life especially in the evening. The locals live here quite cramped, hardly anyone has a balcony, let alone a garden. So without further ado, the pavement and the alleys are converted into common property: People put tables and folding chairs outside, sit down with the neighbours for a chat, peel vegetables, play table tennis or work out together, while loudly honking scooters and bicycles try to make their way. People nod at us friendly and are happy when we buy some fruits and vegetables in one of the tiny little shops. We like this neighbourly cooperation here, there is so much to see while strolling around!

Food

First of all, we actually find a Metro wholesale store. The lady at the entrance issues us a day permit without much ado (sometimes it helps if you obviously don’t understand the language). Once inside, we fill the shopping cart with long missed delicacies like blue cheese, Italian pasta, tomato sauce and German gherkins. Titus is blissfully happy, because he misses most of all the cooking (and baking) together, which is usually part of our daily routine.

In a small French bakery we actually come across pretzels (!) and wholemeal rolls. But for a total of four pastries we pay the equivalent of 10 euros. I already told you about the great cafés, and we still do not mind spending a lot of money for caffeinated drinks. At a nicely located café, Titus discovers to his great joy a piano and is happy to finally play some music for at least half an hour.

Nor is a trip to the local branch of the Hacker-Bräuhaus any less expensive, where Titus is blissfully swaying to Bavarian folk music and eating pretzel after pretzel.

It is more than clear that at least Titus has had enough of Chinese cuisine. The desire for pizza is also growing, and we are happy to fulfil it – even if the menu in the really very good pizzeria is clearly serving Chinese taste (Durian pizza, pizza with mango and strawberries, and on our cheese pizza there are raisins).

Settled in

Besides, we enjoy being very well rested and relaxed in the meantime. An immense recovery effect has set in for all of us, especially since we have slowed down the pace of our journey so much and stayed in one place for a long time by our standards. What I find particularly striking is that after about nine or ten weeks Titus has understood that his dad is also there for him around the clock at the moment. Where at the beginning, mummy was still in demand, I can now gradually step into the background, and Titus joyfully challenges his dad not only to play, but also to do everyday things like brushing his teeth, taking a shower or tucking him in. If this is not the real purpose of our time out together?

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
