Sightseeing in Suzhou, Part 2

Deutsch / English

Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel in Suzhou

Sightseeing in Suzhou, Part 2

Public transport in Suzhou

Our very supportive hotel manager suggests to go hiking in the west of Suzhou. So we lace up our hiking boots, take our rucksack and take the bus to the subway. The bus stops, bus lines and routes are listed in the common navigation apps, each trip costs 2 Yuan per person if paid in cash. When boarding the bus, the driver checks the temperature of the passengers with a thermometer. The buses run so frequently that we never had to wait longer than a few minutes.

We change to the subway and ride for a few Yuan to the final stop Mudu. The ticket machines can be switched to English and as long as one has the right cash with him, buying tickets is a piece of cake.
When we arrive in Mudu after half an hour and search for the right bus stop, the sun is already burning down on our heads, it is really hot today. Three bus stops later we get off at the foot of Tianping Mountain.

Hiking at Tianping Mountain

The parking lots for hikers are already full, and hosts of visitors cavort in the flowering daisy fields. While Norman negotiates with the ladies at the ticket counter over the problems of buying tickets online, I wait and sweat while extended Chinese families try to take the perfect group photo in the sea of blossoms.

Thankfully, a young man once again takes over the purchase of the tickets for us, and then we are allowed to enter the park after a short temperature control – which seems to make little sense at 34 degrees. Titus is in adventure mood today and wants to master as many “challenges” as possible. We find enough of those here: balancing over stones through the pond, the many steep steps on our way to the top, the climbing rocks and finding the right path are just a few of them.

Flowering bushes line the path. It is so hot that all hikers silently agree to take off their face masks. The minimum distance can often not be kept because of the many narrow points and the crowds of people here, but that doesn’t bother anyone. At the top of the 201 metres high hilltop we enjoy the rather unusual view to a big city.

During the descent we choose the somewhat adventurous way over big rocks, our knees wobble a little at the end when we arrive back down quite sweaty in the early afternoon.

After a rest on a shady bench next to the pond we march along the road to the bus stop and take public transport back to the hotel. There we decide to take advantage of the English delivery app again and enjoy an excellent Indian dinner.

Meanwhile, we chat with a German couple who live in Beijing and have travelled to Suzhou over the long holiday weekend. Here in eastern China there are clearly many more non-Chinese on the road than in the rest of China at the moment – for us the sight of other “laowai” is still a bit unusual!

Cat Café

The next day I get up in the morning and start working. Titus has assigned Norman to a movie project, for which the both of them shoot scenes and then edit them on the tablet. To give me a little peace and quiet, the two of them visit later the cat café around the corner, where almost 40 furry animals cavort. The child is blessed.

Dongfangzhimen and Suzhou Mall

So that I can also breathe some fresh air in the afternoon, we go by metro to Lake Jinji again and take extensive photos of “Dongfangzhimen“, “Gate of the Orient” or just “Pants-Building”.

Afterwards we have a coffee with Jana and Dirk in the mall. The two Germans have been living in Suzhou for three years, and we have been following each other on Instagram for quite some time. Who says that extended social media use leads to social isolation?

After amusing conversations about life in Asia, we explore the big shopping mall extensively. We are not so much interested in the more than 800 shops, but in the leisure activities on offer. There is not only an ice skating rink, a go-kart track and a trampoline park, but also an indoor riding arena on the 6th floor. To our relief we later learn that the horses have their stables on the roof and get enough daylight.

Of course there are also numerous restaurants in the Suzhou Center Mall – and we pay a visit to perhaps the most extraordinary one. In the SpaceLab, an invention from Germany, food and drinks are transported to the tables in a kind of roller coaster.

The food is rather sloppy, but it’s great fun to watch the delivery. You could spend whole days in this shopping mall without getting bored! And also outside it doesn’t get boring thanks to the fascinating light show on thee facade after dark.

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
