Sightseeing in Suzhou, Part 3

Deutsch / English

Weltbürger, wohin man blickt.

Pan-Tor

Deutsch / English

Suzhou has a lot to offer – here’s part 3 of the main attractions:

I work every day this week, so I spend the mornings at the computer and on the phone, only interrupted by my daily yoga session. Norman and Titus continue to work on their film projects, and surprisingly, all three of us are so concentrated that we can stay together in one room of only 20 square meters for several hours.

Animal encounters

From noon on it is mummy time – and Titus demands this vehemently. Since Norman had enough animal contact after the cat café, I gladly offer to go to the dog café next door. Besides seven dogs, some of them very young and playful, there are also a few cats, two ducks, a chinchilla and a hedgehog. Titus is (if at all possible) even more enthusiastic and plays persistently with the four-legged friends.

Trip to Finland

But I am hungry, so we wait for Norman to pick us up and together we walk through the old town of Gusu in search of a restaurant. We find one at Finland Home Café, where pictures of lakes, fjords and forests hang on the wall and cinnamon rolls are on the menu. The owner greets us joyfully, he is orginally from Iran, has worked in Finland for many years and has lived in China for twenty years. Another world citizen.

Pan Gate

By bus we spon reach the southern end of the historic old town, where the 2,500 old city gate Panmen (South Gate) still stands, through which in former times people could enter the city both by land and by water. It is windy and grey today, and I am not really enthusiastic about the park that belongs to it. Anyway, we enjoy a long walk alongside the former city wall. But then, unfortunately, the originally planned boat trip is cancelled, as we do not make it for a free slot.

Trip to Japan

So we hop on the bus and drive for almost an hour to SIP, Suzhou Industrial Park. There we have an appointment with Lara and Joscha for Sushi in a small, rather cosy Japanese restaurant. At the tables next to us a lot of alcohol is served, and we have quite a lot of fun, too. By the time we get back to the hotel by taxi for a few yuan, it’s long past bedtime for everyone.

Unfortunately, I do not sleep very well, as in our already very dark and increasingly damp room, all water pipes of the hotel run right beside the headboard of the bed. As soon as somebody takes a shower or flushes the toilet, a waterfall starts acoustically beside me. Not very restful.

That’s why I still need fresh air around my nose after few hours at the desk and lots of instant coffee. We set out in search of a hot pot restaurant, and first of all, while walking through the alleys, we find a piglet café where six baby pigs cuddle up to sleep. The Chinese and their strange attraction to animals…

Bifengfang Street

Titus soon discovers the logo of his favourite restaurant Haidilao with his sharp eyes in the busy pedestrian precinct of Bifengfang Street, and after another delicious round of Chinese fondue we urgently need an extensive walk.

Humble Administrator’s Garden

It is noticeably quieter today, the public holidays are over and so we manage to buy tickets for the “Humble Administrator’s Garden” without advance booking; even at half price. Unfortunately I do not know where the picturesque names for all these Chinese gardens come from, but this one from the early 16th century is one of the four most important gardens in China and is of course listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

The green area is artistically arranged on more than five hectares up to the last blade of grass and every single leaf. Besides, there are countless pavilions, little brooks, bridges and carp ponds. The round gates, called moon gates, as well as the large foyers, pagodas and artistically draped stones look like in a traditonal painting. But to be honest, I have seen so many Chinese gardens in the last weeks that I can’t appreciate them anymore.

Even more animals

Nevertheless, an hour passes by here in no time and by the time we finally find the South exit it is too late to visit the Suzhou Museum. Instead, we have a coffee in a small bar where Titus plays with the tiny little cat baby.

Back at our accommodation a newly arrived puppy awaits him, with which he is happily and touchingly occupied for the rest of the evening and the next morning. Suzhou is not only the city of canals, but also of animal encounters.

      Lieber Peter,
      Nadine

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
