Zwischenbericht / Progress Report

Deutsch / English

What is happening to us during long term travel? A progress report.

We’ve been travelling for almost four months now. Only the three of us, as a family. Many things have turned out differently than we had planned in advance. Many things have been better than we had ever hoped for. We have come a long way. Bad experiences? Not so far.

Except for the ear infection relatively at the beginning – which showed us once again that it is always possible to find good medical care abroad – we are all consistently healthy and alert. No stomach upset so far, an evil to be expected when travelling; the drinking water produced by our filter bottle is indeed producing germ-free water, and the purchase was worth it.

Not a cold, not even a little sniffle. But this is also due to the fact that we have been wearing masks in public consistently for more than two months. Maybe we should keep this in future during the cold season in Munich?

So far, the first-aid kit is untouched except for the muscle pain gel and a few tablets for headaches and travel sickness as well as a few plasters. And the treatment costs for the above-mentioned ear infection have long since been reimbursed by our travel health insurance in an uncomplicated way.

I was allowed to learn that not everything in life can be planned. If I had previously thought through and organised trips of several weeks thoroughly in advance, we had to put on the brakes from the moment we entered China. It was too uncertain whether and how travelling in times of Corona is possible. At any time we had to consider the abortion of our trip. In the end we had to say goodbye to our originally planned itinerary. That hurts, still – I had been looking forward to Iran and Eastern Turkey so much, and Norman is mourning for missing Central Asia, the “Istans”. But what did we get in return? An extensive round trip through China! We were allowed to visit places that most Europeans are not familiar with – and we are constantly asking ourselves why China (especially the southwest and the central areas around Chengdu) is not even on the travel wish list of so many Germans. But the Germans’ scepticism about China is a different matter…

In any case, I have now regained the serenity to decide from day to day what is on the programme and where the journey will take me. And that it was a good decision to enter China and stay here for so long.

Our clothes show the constant strain of the past 15 weeks. T-shirts, socks and trousers are slowly dissolving into rags. If you only have five tops at a time and wash them in a weekly cycle, the natural expiration date has obviously come after four months.
In addition, Titus has outgrown all the clothes. Maybe only by a few centimetres, but still all trousers are too short, shoes too small, sweaters too tight and pyjamas too uncomfortable. Luckily we are in Shanghai in shopping paradise. Not only is there just every imaginable brand, and on top of that adapted to Chinese prices, at least for our circumstances extremely cheap. So we spend half a day to renew our travel wardrobe – long overdue – a little bit.

We have also learned to rearrange ourselves as a family. As unusual as it was at the beginning to be together permanently, Titus for example now enjoys the time he can spend with his dad. For us, it was part of everyday life that first of all the “mummy” was always in charge. Now finally it happens that I am sent away and it works out quite naturally that both parents are equally welcome to say good night and play.

But what sometimes comes too short on such a family trip is pure couple time. Because sitting together in the evening for a drink usually does not work out due to the spatial conditions of our accommodations. And during the day, of course, not even “only the adults” can do something together.

After all, Titus copes well with the constant change, even if the longing to return is growing. And how much he enjoys being together with other children! Only mum and dad are boring in the long run. We have been able to maintain his very good English skills, which he acquired in Singapore, by having Norman give him English play lessons almost every day and listening to English children’s podcasts. In China, English is hardly available in everyday language use anymore.

The child has also learnt how much a trip like this costs. We had set a budget in advance and since our departure we have been putting our expenses day by day into an app. Titus always watches over whether the daily budget is kept and how much money is still in the whole travel budget. Thanks to the low prices in China and because we currently have fewer fixed costs (since we don’t have an apartment), we are still right on schedule. If this is not a lesson for life?

Vielen Dank für euren Zwischenbericht. Sehr spannend.

      Nadine

About us / Über uns

We are a family of three: Norman, Titus (*2014) and Nadine. Tested by travel and infested with wanderlust, we dared to embark on the adventure of traveling from Singapore to Munich – overland by public transport. Until Covid-19 thwarted our plans – but it couldn’t stop us…

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
