Shanghai: An afternoon with friends and a walk along the West Bund

Deutsch / English

Shanghai: An afternoon with friends and a walk along West Bund

What we miss the most during travelling is the “normal” everyday life. That sounds funny, who longs for sometimes boring everyday life? But when you live in hotel rooms for months on end, see friends and family only on your mobile phone screen and have no more recurring appointments that create a routine, you do yearn for normality every now and then: meeting friends in a private environment, regular sports lessons and play dates with other children, a freshly baked cake, …

What a pleasure that we have met Carina, André and their three children; with them we could at least spend one afternoon to get a whiff of exactly this breath of everyday air.

Small town feeling

In the early afternoon, we find ourselves in their compound at the very southwest end of the metro line 2. The taxi driver who takes us from the subway station the rest of the way up to the residential area curves quite disorientated through the narrow streets. Fortunately, Carina sends us her location via WeChat, and thus we find her single-family house. The compound consists of a good 500 such houses with garden, at the entrance to the quarter a guard monitors the flow of visitors and suppliers. Inside it feels like a village: hardly any cars on the street, but crowds of children with bicycles, scooters and roller skates, playgrounds and sports fields, two small supermarkets and just normal small houses. Thee metropolis of Shanghai with its skyscrapers and crazy traffic seems to be far away.

Titus immediately feels like home, runs into the house and only comes back to us to munch two pieces of the delicious, freshly baked apple pie. Meanwhile, we sit comfortably in the courtyard, drinking coffee and chatting, while from time to time walkers stop and wave at the gate. People know each other here.

Sports lesson

At shortly before 4 pm we make our way to the clubhouse, where Kung Fu training for children always takes place on Thursday afternoon. And Titus is allowed to accompany the two boys and join in today. He is completely enchanted by the sports lessons, but he is even more fascinated by the fact that almost all of the more than 20 children in the class speak German. Already on the way back he announces, sweaty as hell, that he definitely wants to return to training next week. After another play round with the host children, who also have a cat, it is already dawning.

For dinner we all go together to the noodle shop around the corner. Titus has borrowed a scooter and is happily riding ahead – he seems to have really missed just such activities and normal pursuits. And such a visit to friends does us a lot of good too!

Walk along the West Bund

The next day we follow the recommendation of Carina and André and take a long walk along the so-called West Bund. When we leave the metro at Yunjin Road, we first come across the creative quarter: several museums, galleries and workshops have settled here on the former Expo area. Along the western bank of the Huangpu River, a more than eleven-kilometer-long boulevard has been created with art installations, parks, sports facilities and many, unexpected views of the southern part of Shanghai. Unfortunately, especially today it is very warm and muggy, I feel like in a steam bath after the first meters.

Therefore Titus is not quite as motivated to try out the great climbing facilities. Luckily you can refill your own water bottle everywhere at drinking water dispensers. Despite the heat we enjoy the trip very much and Shanghai surprises us again with its places worth seeing and its diversity.

Flight booking, finally successful

Back at the hotel – after a long, long bus ride, which never gets boring because there is always so much to see outside in such a crazy city! – we start looking for flights once again. This time successfully, because with loosening up the travel restrictions in Europe, the big airline companies are also starting to operate again slowly and at “normal prices” from the end of May onwards. And then we will be on board!

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
