Shanghai: Shopping, Natural History Museum, Tianzifang

Deutsch / English

Deutsch / English

Has anyone ever been shanghaied?

One day I remember the term “shanghaiing”, which I must have picked up from some novel. “Shanghaiing” refers to the practice of kidnapping people to serve as sailors, and that was commonplace around a hundred years ago, especially in the bustling port area of Shanghai, the commercial centre par excellence.

The term also fits us a little: there were actually never any plans to come to Shanghai. The city wasn’t on our plan at all, as it was a good thousand kilometres away from our original itinerary. And now we are here – but not “by force”, rather unexpectedly. In contrast to the certainly not very enthusiastic sailors who woke up in the morning after a night of drinking in one of the pubs on board a merchant ship with a three-year contract, we are actually very fond of Shanghai. With novels and biographies I let myself be transported into the crazy world of opium caves, courtesan houses and trading companies, and as I walk through the concession districts, along the Bund and the narrow streets of Puxi every day I can well imagine what it might have looked like here at the beginning of the 20th century.

But as always, after a few days full of new impressions, we feel exhausted – and decide to take a break from our daily routine, with only one activity per day. Our hotel has extended our stay at a again very reasonable price, we are now somehow permanent guests.

Shopping trip of the superlatives

As even after the most beautiful lazing around in the hotel room, a little exercise is appropriate at least once a day, we start to the West Nanjing Road and the shopping mile located there. As already reported, each of us here urgently needs new clothes, the months of continuous use show traces, and most of the three pairs of trousers, five pairs of socks and five t-shirts that everyone has in their luggage have to be replaced.

Of course we find what we need, among others in the world’s largest Uniqlo store. There, even the two men, who are normally not particularly enthusiastic about shopping, fall into a kind of shopping frenzy. The same thing happens a few days later in the sports shop, which is just as oversized.

Natural History Museum

While I lug the shopping back to the hotel, where it slowly gets cramped in the room, Norman and Titus visit the Shanghai Natural History Museum. As I gather from their stories, they are very enthusiastic, especially about the stately dinosaur exhibition, whose exhibits are partly still lifelike. Also here, as in the Science and Technology Museum, a second visit is worthwhile.

Tianzifang

Very calmly it goes on the next day in Tianzifang. While on the weekend the crowds of people cavort here, on Tuesday noon everything is quiet in the narrow alleys of the “historical” old town quarter in the middle of the former French Concession. Nevertheless, we are denied entry at the first entrance, because once again we cannot fill out the registration page online correctly. We don’t let us get down, try our luck in the next cross street – and lo and behold, the security guard there only measures our temperature and lets us pass. The artists’ quarter is full of boutiques, bars and cafés, which unfortunately all seem less original than expected. After all, a wonderfully stroll in the pedestrian zone.

Culinary delicacies

Our evenings are not very exciting: sometimes we take a walk into the neighboured alleyways, where we find cookshop after cookshop. Almost all of them have the partly still living menu on display in front of the door. There are fish, octopuses, frogs, snails, crabs, sometimes also turtles and other animals, which are more or less actively bobbing around in plastic boxes. At the roadside the drivers of the delivery services wait in long rows for the ordered food to be prepared and ready for delivery.

We do without such culinary adventures and prefer to enjoy very, very good hot pot (whereby the variant with chilies and Sichuan pepper is hardly edible).

Or sometimes Indian food. In the Indian restaurant Titus marvels at the photos of the Bollywood stars on the walls and while eating he can hardly take his eyes off the monitor on the wall, on which one Bollywood hit with the corresponding dance clip is played after the other. On the way home by bus we enjoy a very cheap city tour. We pass the brightly illuminated facades of the skyscrapers of Pudong and the time-honoured bank houses at the Bund.

Another time we order pizza and have a movie night in our room. That is exactly the kind of “normality” we need sometimes!

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
