Shanghai: Sunday Brunch, Marriage Market and Climber’s Paradise

Deutsch / English

Heiratsmarkt am People’s Square

Shanghai: Sunday brunch, marriage market and climbing paradise

The great frustration has subsided and a solution has been found. Not a perfect one, not a cheap one – but one we can all live with. After a lot of back and forth we have now booked the next possible flight to Germany. It departs only once a week, and if it were to be cancelled, we would still have a small time buffer for another try.

So the travel budget is practically empty, and how and where we are going to spend the remaining weeks of our family vacation, we still have to decide.

Until then, of course, we want to experience as much as possible in exciting Shanghai!

Sundays are for brunch

To make the most of our extended stay in Shanghai, we treat ourselves to something special, namely brunch at the W Hotel, which is held there every Sunday. There, one gets not only a multi-course menue and a sumptuous dessert buffet but also a free flow of sparkling wine, wine and cocktails – being astonishingly cheap compared to Singapore standards. Paired with hip music, a cool ambience and a fantastic view to Pudong.

The food does not convince us a 100 percent, but we hit the drinks – and I’m not arguing when Titus back at the hotel in the early evening once again lives out his enthusiasm for sports TV (gymnastics!) and I can doze next to him.

Jade Buddha Temple – unfortunately only from the outside

Norman persuades us to a “really very last” temple visit. Of course completely rightly, according to all travel guides one should have seen the Jade Buddha Temple absolutely. In order to make the child also merciful, Carina, André, Leo and Vince join us, so at least fun is provided. At an amazingly sunny and scorchingly hot 32 degrees – not the best weather for sightseeing – we meet in Jing’an in front of the red wooden doors of the temple complex, which is already impressive from the outside. But unfortunately the doors are closed, and the few ladies sitting in front of them with devotional objects (incense sticks) wave goodbye.

The mourning is limited, specially for the children, and the adults can make friends with the thought of an iced coffee. So we take the bus together to the People’s Square, where park and cafés are right next to each other.

Marriage Market at People’s Square

I am quite astonished, in the otherwise so contemplative park, hundreds of retired locals cavort directly at the entrance. Almost all of them carry large pieces of paper in front of them – and I find out that the legendary Shanghai Marriage Market takes place today.

The older people are worried about their unmarried offspring. Most of them are over 30, have studied and a good job and are usually not in a hurry to enter into marriage. But this is not possible for the would-be parents-in-law. After all, the only thing that counts after retirement age in China is the joy of future grandchildren. Grandparents are still the ones raising them, because parents work full-time on equal terms.

So every weekend, hosts of self-appointed marriage brokers make their way to People’s Square, where sons and daughters are advertised like merchandise. Age, height, weight and income are extensively advertised. If another “provider” likes what he reads, photos are shown on the mobile phone display and blind dates are arranged between the children if they are interested. Tinder, the Chinese way.

Difficult to place, however, are women who are too tall (everything over 1.65 meters is critical in China) and women who earn too much or men who earn too little. It is complicated.

Public Serenity and Climber’s Paradise

While the three boys already storm the green area, we stroll leisurely behind them. The older visitors of the park are watching the romping children happily. Meanwhile we are amused about the matter of course with which the Chinese do rather “private” things in public. Cleaning ears, cutting nails, singing, shouting, gymnastics, head massage, dancing, taking a nap – everything takes place amidst the Sunday strollers. And nobody gives an odd look (except for us). I would like to cut a slice off this typical Chinese serenity.

The three boys find the hustle and bustle here completely normal, breaking wheels with the seniors and conquering rocks and trees. Titus has discovered his love of climbing thanks to these best role models. Now, the three of them hang on branches like monkeys and scramble around on rocks with breakneck speed. Who would have thought that the park, which seems so leisurely and peaceful is a real climber’s paradise – at least for three German children who have no inhibitions about acting out their massive urge to move?

In the end, the three are completely sweaty and dead tired. Mission accomplished!

    Liebe Nadine,

      Alles Liebe,
      Nadine

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
