Day Trip to Zhujiajiao

Deutsch / English

Absolut empfehlenswert!

Zhujiajiao, the former water town

The water town of Zhujiajiao has demonstrably existed for over 1,700 years. Due to its favourable location at the junction of several rivers, it was an important trading centre for silk arriving from Jiangsu and later for the rice trade. Because of its many bridges and canals, it is referred to in many travel guides as “Shanghai’s Venice” – because Zhujiajiao is only a good 30 kilometres southwest of Shanghai city center.

Thus, we simply take the subway and ride for nearly one and a half hours up to the second last stop of the subway line 17. It gets noticeably greener here, even some cultivated fields are alongside the tracks. From the station Zhujiajiao, it is only a short walk – or a trip with the bicycle rickshaw, whose drivers wait for customers in front of the station building – up to the historical city centre.

We prefer to take a walk and discover some of the many small shops, which offer everything from drills to birthday cakes in a sales area of maximum eight square meters. The shops are also the living rooms of families with several members, and it is almost a familiar sight to see a cot or a toddler crawling around in the midst of the chaos of a tiny craft workshop. In China, where men and women work and earn money almost equally, it is quite “normal” for fathers and mothers to look after the children during the day – if, for once, the grandparents are not available.

We hardly entered the historic alleys of the old town – without the usual entrance fee – when an American-Chinese family approaches us and askes if we would like to share a boat with them for a small city tour. No sooner said than done: shortly afterwards we are sitting in a wooden boat and let the Chinese version of a gondolier stalk us through the canals.

Unfortunately, the trip is quite short, but compared to the Venetian counterpart, the price was fabulously cheap. During the stroll through the oldtown, we are completely absorbed by the smells wafting from the many restaurants and food stands. Stinky tofu, all kinds of animal products and pickled vegetables challenges Titus and me in particular, so that we hardly enjoy the views of the beautiful bridges and buildings.

Only when we leave the main road and turn into the side streets it does become more bearable. I purchase several pearl necklaces, which are a kind of “speciality” here, and we strengthen ourselves with an iced tea. Norman is fully in love with bubble teas of any kind, I don’t like the jelly additions to the drinks at all.

Fortunately we have packed enough provisions, as the many restaurants that are clearly designed for Chinese customers do not attract us at all. Typical is for example that the tables are covered with dozens of layers of plastic foil. If a guest is finished with his meal (which in China leaves quite a mess on the table), the waitress (or Fuwuyuan in Chinese) simply folds up the uppermost foil together with the plastic dishes and cutlery (also standard here) and put everything into the trash. Without any time spending on cleaning the table it is ready for the next guest.

Although the view of the canals enlightened with the many mounted lanterns is certainly beautiful after dark, we start our way back in the late afternoon. For this we actually allow ourselves a bicycle rickshaw, because on such a weekday there is not very much going on here in Zhujiajiao and the driver, who would have liked to drive us already in the morning, is visibly relieved about the earnings.

He fights his way up to the metro station without any gear change, whereby he turns full swing into the middle of a busy crossing and I have to close my eyes for a short moment. At the end, we start the long return trip with the subway and are happy about the cheap excursion: 10 Yuan per trip with the subway (1,20 Euro), 40 Yuan for the rickshaw (approximately 4,80 Euro), 50 Yuan for a boat trip (6 Euro) – and a few Yuan for drinks. Absolutely recommendable!

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
