Titus’ Blog: What to eat in Asia?

Deutsch / English

What is there to eat for Kids on a journey through Asia?

Today I want to tell you what you can eat on a journey through Asia. You don’t have to be afraid of starving, because you’ll find something yummy everywhere.

Singapore

My favorite restaurant in Singapore is Haidilao. They have Chinese hot pot (a kind of fondue). Especially delicious are the tomato soup, corn on the cob and a kind of crispy pancakes. The noodle man spins around with noodle dough and then puts the raw noodles into the soup. They taste great!

Malaysia, Thailand and Laos

Mom and Dad like to go to the Night Market. But I usually don’t like it that much because it’s always smelly and crowded. Luckily I was able to find grilled corn on the cob and hot chestnuts, which taste good to me.

In Bangkok dad ate fried beetles at the Night Market. But I did not want to try them. Mom drank a coconut every day in Thailand, but I don’t like it at all. Luckily there is pita bread, tomatoes or pizza almost everywhere in Thailand. And fries!

China

Chinese food is often not so tasty for me because I don’t like rice. And the food is often quite spicy. Luckily you can find cup noodles in every supermarket, we always have some in our backpack. In Chinese restaurants you can ask for hot water to prepare it.

Haidilao (see above), you can find here in every city as well as Din Tai Fung, where you can get delicious dumplings. In China it works that way that you order different dishes for everybody – always at least two more different dishes than people sitting at the table. Then everyone can eat what they like best. For me, for example, I like vegetables without any sauce and noodles.

And in Suzhou and Shanghai we also ate sushi, especially edamame and cucumber maki I like very much!

And in Chengdu you could buy big, freshly baked flat bread with sesame seeds at street stalls everywhere, that was so yummy!

But in the supermarket you could also just buy bread, butter and vegetables and then have a snack in your hotel room. This is what I like the most! Only cheese is difficult to find, it is only sometimes sold in Western supermarkets in China.

I miss cooking. I really like cooking. But unfortunately that is not possible in the hotels. On our trip we could only cook in Bangkok because we stayed in an apartment. There was a real kitchen where we cooked delicious noodles with pea-lemon-cream-sauce and parmesan.

Here is my favourite recipe:

Ingredients (for 3 persons):

  • 300 grams of pasta, for example penne or fusilli
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 200 gr peas (frozen or fresh or canned)
  • 200 ml cream or soy cream
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 clove of garlic (optional)
  • Parmesan

Pour the noodles into the boiling salted water until they are soft.
In a pan, heat the peas (and optionally the finely chopped clove of garlic) and mix them with the cream and lemon juice. Add salt to taste.
On a plate, mix the pasta with the sauce and sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over it.
Enjoy!

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
