Unternehmungen in Wien / Activities in Vienna

Deutsch / English

Tel Aviv Beach Bar

Wien, Wien nur du allein (Famous Song about Vienna)

Only by walking through Vienna, we feel transported back to the imperial era. The stuccoed facades, the stately houses – many of which have been “topped up” with ultra-modern attics -, the horse-drawn carriages, the many, many coffee houses, … No wonder that I keep thinking about operetta and waltz melodies, even if it is of course very clichéd.

Haus der Musik (House of Music)

To even make this ongoing sound in my head worse, our first route takes us via Stephansplatz with its cathedral to Haus der Musik. I have fond memories of this museum from visits in the 2000s, as it was one of the most interactive and modern museums of all times. And lo and behold: even in the year 2020 this still applies, Titus is already in the entrance area of the dance-along computer game and the piano keyboard built into the staircase highly enthusiastic. With a lot of persuasion, we guide him into the actual exhibition. The first floor is dedicated to the Vienna Philharmonic, we are allowed to clap along to the Radetzky March and Titus perseveringly composes his own waltz melodies on an amazingly well-functioning computer-animated dice board.

On the next floor there are wonderful games on the subject of acoustics, which even the graduate physicist in the family is delighted with. In the instrument department you can try out the difference between idiophones and string instruments. All the interactive panels work perfectly, and even in the somewhat dusty-looking exhibition about the great Viennese composers (Haydn, Beethoven, Strauss and Co.) there are always interactive monitors – the Mozart face, for example, copies exactly the grimaces you make in front of him!

On the third floor, finally, there is the climax, which I still have fond memories of: The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is seated in front of the audience by means of a room-sized projection, and in front of it a music stand with its baton is waiting for the visitors. You can pick the baton up, select a piece of music, conduct it – and the orchestra follows the conductor in tempo and dynamics! But if the courageous young conductor drives it too wildly, one of the musicians soon stands up and insults the baton-wielding conductor in a Viennese taunt. If, on the other hand, you master the whole piece of music without too much deviation in tempo, you even get benevolent clapping in the end. It’s great fun, each of us tries his luck several times, and at least at the Radetzky March or the Annen Polka we soon manage a successful run!

Naschmarkt (Sweets Market)

Outside it is raining, so we hurry to the Naschmarkt equipped with umbrellas. There, nearly all the market stands are open, and the many small restaurants make the choice difficult: here, really everybody finds something delicious!

Vienna is big, but we buy a weekly ticket for 17,10 euros via the app WienMobil. This is the cheapest alternative with which we can us subway, tram and buses all over the city. Children travel free of charge before they enter school age, as well as during the Vienna school holidays.

Tel Aviv Beach Bar

I spend the rest of the afternoon in a small coffee house, while Norman and Titus make their way to the laundromat. In the evening the sky clears up – and we stop for dinner at the Tel Aviv Beach Bar, which is only a few minutes walk from our hotel. Its typical Bauhaus style reminds us of the buildings in Tel Aviv’s nightlife district.

With our feet in the sand we enjoy hummus, falafel and of course white wine spritzer (best invention of the Austrians is Summer Spritzer: 1 part white wine, 2 parts soda)! It’s very cosy here, and like the evening before there’s a lot going on at the banks of the Danube Canal – quite rightly so!

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
