Nachhaltig Reisen

Natürlich gilt fast überall in Asien: Peel it, boil it, cook it – or forget it.

Green Travel

Everyone who travels changes the world. Not only by immersing in foreign cultures and making contacts to locals. But also by leaving a footprint. A footprint that is not necessarily ecologically worthwhile.

Long-distance travel is the main cause of CO₂ pollution from long-haul flights. Beaches at holiday resorts are littered, disposable plates and straws are flooding many places, just like drinking water in plastic bottles. The disposal of the affluent garbage is then left to the locals, who usually have no suitable recycling programs at all. As a result, the pile of rubbish grows from year to year.

On the other hand, travel also creates an awareness of the conditions in this world. Tolerance is trained, because only those who deal with life in other countries and the values of other cultures can have a different, more worldly view of themselves and the environment in the future.

So we will certainly not be able to do without travelling to foreign countries completely in the future either. But how can we nevertheless contribute to keeping environmental pollution as low as possible?

Drinking Water:

Three people who drink up to three litres of water a day – that’s a lot. Since tap water is only safe for health in countries outside Europe, at least, we have purchased a portable water purifier. With it we filter the tap water in seconds and fill our reusable water bottles.

After six months of continuous use, our conclusion is: Absolutely ingenious, we never had problems with polluted drinking water. The replacement filter in our luggage was useful, because the manufacturer recommends cleaning about 135 litres of water per filter.

We noticed positively that especially in Thailand, in Laos and in China drinking water was almost always provided free of charge, mostly from large filter systems. There we were also allowed to fill our own water bottles at any time and anywhere.

Food on the Spot:

Especially with our permanently hungry child we always have to make sure to have enough snacks with us. To avoid plastic packaging as much as possible, we buy fresh fruit and vegetables at market stalls. Of course, this applies almost everywhere in Asia: Peel it, boil it, book it – or forget it.

The pocket knife, the peeler and the foldable plate, which also serves as a cutting board, have therefore proved to be the most important items for us when we travel.

Moreover, we have several tightly closable containers as also snack bags in our luggage in which we can pack the leftovers of the restaurant visit.

Personal Hygiene:

We have avoided plastic in the toilet bag as much as possible. For showering and washing our hair we use soaps and shampoo bars, also deodorant cream in a tin can, razors with interchangeable blades, wooden toothbrushes, …

Most of it is very productive, only toothpaste we had to buy again and again on the spot. If you don’t recognize any brand in the shop and you can’t read the imprint, it takes five times longer than usual!

Transportation:

Except for a few taxi rides, we managed to travel 10,000 kilometers exclusively by public transport. Our favorite is always the train, which is the most relaxing way to travel. But also the coaches, especially in China, are really a good option. We have not missed our own car, quite the contrary!

A downer was the flight we had to take from Shanghai to Frankfurt. There was simply no alternative, thanks to Corona. After all, we compensated the CO₂ consumption of 7,148 kg, which was caused by this flight, by donating to atmosfair. This will be used to finance projects for the development and expansion of renewable energies in developing countries.

So if you still don’t want to do without travelling: It is the small steps that lead to change!

Now our 6-month journey is really over… We final Now our 6-month journey is really over… We finally arrived – after starting in Singapore – back in Munich!

We have experienced a lot, gained wonderful experiences and impressions of the world and the people in Asia and Europe and above all spent a lot of time as a family. Of course, due to COVID-19 we could not complete the overland route from Singapore to Munich as originally planned. But nevertheless, we are very happy to have made the best out of the 6 month break – and above all to have stayed healthy.

We’re closing the posts 🙁 (check out our blog at www.fromsingaporetomunich.com , too!) with a photo from our last leg in Hungary and the view out of the moving train – a very similar photo to the one we took on our first leg when we left Singapore by train to Malaysia.

Stay healthy! The next journey will come for sure! 😁
